What exactly is Provera?
I haven't ovulated or had a period in over 8 months. My gyno lately gave me Provera. I want to know what is it, what it does, side effects, etc. Will it cause me to ovulate again? The only article I know is it's supposed to make me start my period. But what's the point of me starting my period if I don't ovulate along beside it or it doesn't encourage future ovulation?
Any help you could dispense me would be appreciated. Also, if you know of something that does encourage ovulation, please let me know so I can talk give or take a few it with my gyno. Thanks!

Provera is a form of progesterone. It is used to help women beside anovulatory cycles restart a new cycle.
You will not ovulate on Provera. The point of taking it is to end the cycle you are on and start a new one. When a cycle go on too long without ovulation occuring, doctors will prescribe Provera to force a period and start over. Often times, on a new cycle your doctor will after give you an ovulation inducing medication such as Clomid, if ovulation has been a problem. For some women starting over within a new cycle is enough to ovulate. It depends on the fertility history of the patient.
What progesterone does is build up your bin liner, which is what your body normally does as you get closer to ovulation, and then after you ovulate. When you don't achieve pregnant, your progesterone levels drop and at a certain level (below 2) your body know to shed its lining. Provera mimics this. It builds your lining, then when you stop taking it your plane drops, and eventually your body will know to shed its lining (start your period).
You will take the pills for about 10 days (this vary depending on your condition and your dose). You will get your period anywhere from a few days to a week after your last pill.
You may or may not enjoy side effects with Provera. Progesterone can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, tiredness, breast torment, nausea. You may have some, all, or none of these side effects.

Provera is simply high dose of hormone progeterone. You lug it 3-5 days and when you stop taking it, progesterone levels drop causing any uterine lining to shed i.e. induces a length.
That doesn't mean it will help you ovulate. But sometimes, since your hormones are out-of-whack at the moment, jump starting beside a new period can re-balance them, so there may be potential that you may hold a normal cycle. But if u have a fertility issue (which you likely do), provera may still not do anything save for give u period.
Test for PCOS, which is the most common condition that cause irregular/no periods (hormonal imbalance). it can be addressed with med call metformin which can help bring cycles to more normal and ovulating more frequently. Do other fertility tests as ably to figure out why no period in 8 months.
