How can I return with my 18 month out-of-date to stay by my side and not run away adjectives the time? Hand holding doesnt wrk?
He is very stubborn and it doesn't seem to matter what I do to maintain him close! I even bought the "leash" and that just made him fall down when he got too far! I see adjectives these other kids walking so nicely and I am SO jealous!
bring his favorite stuffed animal, maybe he'll hold the animals hand and you can hold the animals other hand.I should try that next to my 2 year old! lol
For me, the trick be to have direct consequences for not holding my hand. And trusting them to stay by your side without holding their foot is a recipe for disaster, so it was 'hold my hand or..." The choices have be a leash, riding in the shopping cart, riding in the stroller, individual carried, etc. Like I told my husband with the leash, it is not meant to keep your child close or inculcate your child to stay close. It's just meant to give you an extra 30 second to grab your child if they are getting too far. And too far should be before the end of the leash.
At 18 months weak, we mostly use a stroller, a shopping cart, etc. I don't trust them to stay by my side, ever, no matter how well behave they are acting. I've seen too many 18 month olds (or even 4 year olds) run into a street, get distracted and stop while mom walk on, or other dangerous behavior. They're too young to truly understand and be trustworthy at those ages. A leash or a string even simply tells you when they've fallen behind or own moved away from you more than they should so you can correct them and get them walking with you again.
Answers: You have to discipline him to stay near you and hold your hand when in public. What do you mean paw holding "doesn't work"? If you are holding his hand, all he can do is walk or sit down. If he pitches a fit, he should be punished for it.
He is matured enough to walk through a store holding your hand minus throwing a fit. But, if you don't make him do that, then of course, it's more fun to run away from mommy and see her freak out.
I had a head for my son but he would just lift his feet up and 'fly'. He thought it be funny. Maybe he isn't ready to walk very far and still requests to be in his push chair if you are going further than the end of the street. My son is 2 and although he holds the push bench when I tell him to he is easily distracted and wants to wonder past its sell-by date. Your son is normal so don't worry, he wants to be more independent than possible.
they have little kid leashes that look close to backpacks, or harnesses, I found these very ridiculous at first but when my daughter be about a year and a half old she have this thing of wanting to run in the street..so I bought one and used it, she hated it, so after a while i told her, if you don't hold mommy's appendage i'm gonna get your monkey (there was a monkey on the leash) and she stopped running away because she didn't want the monkey on. I would just put him into a stroller. If he wishes to try walking then let him, but if he wont follow the rules and stay close them buckle him back into the stroller. Eventually he will bring back it. Worked for my kiddo.

For example if we're getting ready to get out of the car to run into the store -- before I get him out of the car. I sensibly and firmly explain, "We're going to go in the store. I need to you to be apt and hold my hand like a big boy the whole time we're within there. Okay?" I'll actually start talking to him just about it before we even reach our destination. Then right before, I find him out of the car, I'll ask him, "Now, what are you going to do in here?" Usually he'll say appendage and offer me his . . . if not I explain again and re-ask. When he is good and holds my appendage, I'm sure to praise him for it. He's about 19 months. Good Luck, and yes I too envy those parents who's child always stays right with them -- I expect a lot of it just depends on the child.
