What are some ways to supply a child "Time Out"?
How long of a time out is good? What should I make them do? Any tips would be appreciated?
we have a little rug in the corner of the kitchen and whenever he act up he knows where to go he a moment ago sits there until I tell him to get up which is usually 10 min. dont tender in to there cries cause later they feel like its ok for them to get up and rebuke them.
You are supposed to give them a minute for respectively year... so if he/she is 2yrs old you give them 2 mins... and if 3yrs old, 3 minutes, etc, etc, etc... It's supposed to be according their age bc of their attention spam... You can a moment ago make them sit down, or stand in a corner for those few minutes... so they can reflect on what they hold done... After the time has passed then you talk to them and explain them why what they did be wrong and not to do it again bc its not fun to be standing up for a couple of mins facing the wall... Just a thought
Answers: The length of time is best at one minute per age of continuous minutes in time out. If the child get out before that three minutes is up you must put him back in lacking saying a word. You may have to do that many, several times over the course of a few days but then the child will know his boundaries.
where you set up time out depends totally on the child. I cared for one child who would hold sat in time out all year without caring, but put him in a bench for a few minutes and he was not a happy camper.
My son couldn't have care less whether it was a corner or a chair as long as he could see what be going on. For him it was to his room and boy was he not happy near that!
If you sit a child in the corner have him facing out. It is not good for his perception to face a corner and you want to make sure he sees what he is missing.
Just listen to your child. He will show and relate you what you need to do. If he doesn't react to where you put him, it isn't working. Try something unusual until it works.
Most of all, get down to his eye level and explain to him why he is going to time out. Don't discuss to or acknowledge him while he is there. Above all, be consistent. If a behaviour is wrong one time, it is other wrong. Just remember to keep a sense of humor and pick your battles.
1 minute per year of age. (2 year old 2 minutes, 5 yr old 5 mins), sitting in a bench is a good idea. I don't recommend their bed or where the sit to munch through because then they may feel bed at bedtime or sitting eating supper is a punishment.
