Why does Scouts Canada charge $160 registration levy when the rest of the world is charging freshly a couple bucks?
I cannot get a direct response from Scouts Canada. They just tell me "we own subsidies available for children who cannot afford it." I find this fee prohibitive, exclusionary, and ridiculous. When my husband finished with the Rover Scouts only 10 years ago, he be paying a $25 registration fee. Why is this fee so high surrounded by Canada?
I have no notion. When I was in Girl Guides Canada the cost was in the order of that too. I think maybe it has something to do next to going to camps and all te activities they do. Most other organization like that in other countries will fundraise for the money to go to military camp but we just pay the fee and we can progress to camp. I think it is stupid but that's the way it is.

I don't know what council you're contained by but each charges different amounts to cover expeses. For example, the $56.50 requested by the Greater Toronto Council of Scouts Canada is used to help cover its operating costs. Following is the breakdown of this amount:
$11.00: Services & support to Groups: leader, commissioner & service troop training; special events; communications; staff salaries; marketing
$16.00: Camping: code-compliance for structures at campsites; Provincial requirements for safe drinking water
$13.50: Council office: administration; stationery & postage; leasing premises; financial development
$16.00: Contribution to offset modernizer registration fees
Answers: Actually, that is not far off what Cub Scouts in the USA charges, although if we engender our goal for popcorn sales, we don't have to settle anything. Girl Scouts national registration is only $12, but the troop asks for $4 a month for their own supplies.
The Boy Scouts of America is profusely more than 'a couple bucks', and most other countries have a less strong national program and organization.
I would bet that cut of that is the national fee (apparently about $60), and the rest is the local fees- within the BSA, each troop or pack usually adds on their yearly dues to the charge.
As an example, it costs about $175 to run a year's program for the typical Cub Scout in my area, not including summer military camp or uniform issues.
We found that MOST parents preferred to pay that amount rather than do fund-raising, pay weekly dies, etc.
Ask your local boss about it and see what they say.
