if you had a child who was mentally ill, and an operation come up were it can make your child the smartest person contained by the world would you did it? why not? what reasons?

this is for school and i need reason why you wouldn't want your child to have it?whether for religious reasons or personal?why?
The problem with the question is that it assumes that mentally not at your best and smart are opposites.

What you would end up with is a very smart creature who is mentally ill.

I don't think we should do brain surgery to improve IQ. I deliberate the world needs variety and some of the smartest things come from people next to regular and low IQs. Being smart doesn't mean you can do things in life better than others, it only just means you learn and understand things faster and as a result you can learn more things. It doesn't mean you are a better person.

So, no I wouldn't do it because I mull over we couldn't possibly know the consequences of doing that and there are many things as important as smart.

Edit: Mentally under the weather is NOT the same as developmentally disabled (retarded). It doesn't change my answer, but please to some research and learn the difference. Source(s): My IQ puts me within the genius range.

It really depends on what you mean by "mentally off-colour." I have 2 children who are "mentally ill," in that they are bi-polar. I wouldn't do anything at adjectives to change them! Sure, it would be nice if my teen daughter didn't have manic and depressed episodes or medication changes to try to set off her. But, she is a wonderful, valuable person as is. Her brother is already gifted intellectually. My daughter's boyfriend is schizophrenic, another "mental illness" and he is minus a doubt, the smartest person I have ever known. Also probably the nicest. II doubt he would ever want to translate. It is what makes him him. Some studies show that mental illnesses like these go mitt in hand with giftedness. So, they are a curse and a blessing. If you close-fisted a mental illness where a child might not progress from, say, age 2? And an operation would see them to, then sure. But, you can't lump all "mental illnesses" into something people would want to avoid, repair or procure away from! Some brilliant, creative and important people have be mentally ill, and many discoveries have be made by them as well. Being the smartest person in the world would be a burden. Just giftedness as I know it is unyielding to live with.
Answers:    I am glad you made the distinction between mentally ill, and mental retardation. Mentally retarded, or disabled children can still revise, they just have more hurdles that get within the way of retaining and understanding information...

Anyway, if I had a child who be mentally retarded and there was an operation which would correct the disorder, yes I would have it done. As long as in that were no known side effects that could further harm my child. I wouldnt do it to take home my child the smartest person in the world, I would do it so that they could live a normal vivacity with far more advantages and oppertunities. children with severe mental retardation ofte grow to need assistance surrounded by their adult lives. I would want my child to have a normal festive adult life.
Mentally ill & smart can coincide. Do you aim have a handicap? If I thought it would give my child a better quality of energy I would but if it had severe risks associated then I would not. I will always love & adopt my children as they are, I just want them to be happy & have a dutiful life.
