I necessitate help out near my son sticking things contained by his mouth. What do I do?
My step-son lives with me and my husband. He is 5 yrs old now and will be 6 surrounded by Feb. He is constantly sticking things in his mouth. I am fearful for him because I know first hand what can happen when you're sticking things within your mouth constantly. I've always bitten my nails but 5 yrs ago I worked at a casino and was constantly messing beside money. I continued to bite my nails during this time and ended up getting foot and mouth disease. It's basically a really strict form of strep where you have blisters on your tongue and throat. The dr. told me that I got it from biting my fingernails and not wash my hands enough, but I washed my hand all the time at that job because my fingers would get black from the money! He prescribed me strain killers for the pain and I remember they just made me loopy and sick to my stomach but didn't pocket care of the pain.
I don't want my step-son to go through this. Does anyone know of anyway to procure him to stop putting his hands in his mouth? Oh, it's not just his hand. He plays with cars all the time and he'll stick them in his mouth, his motor track, and anything else that's in his hands. When I say he sticks his hand in his mouth I don't mean sucking on his fingers I mean he'll obtain all his fingers in his mouth and he'll lick up and down his arm.
Give him some sugar free gum to chew on. Sounds like he has an oral fixation. Maybe own your husband talk to his pediatrician about it just contained by case it's something more serious.
Ask your doctor about bitter-tasting substances to put on your son's fingers. I don't know if this practice is still done (Like quinine on the thumb to stop thumbsucking) but it would be worth looking into.
Answers: Maybe he has some sort of disorder, I know my son would bite his nail, and sit on the staircase, which is the only thing in the house carpeted, and find stuff to put surrounded by his mouth and try to eat. I couldn't take him to the playground near our house anymore, because instead of sand or concrete it have those wood chips, like the kind they put in a hamster's coop, and my son would get off of a slide and then when I wasn't looking stick a few of those things within his mouth. I took him to his doctor and they said he had PICA. So they prescribed him iron, which I give to him 3 times a day, and I don't see him putting things within his mouth now, to the extreme that he was before he started taking the iron. Hope this help!

I wonder if your stepson is a bit stressed being away from his mother and his mouthing things is a manifestation of his anxiety. Make sure he gets lots of attention and try to distract him when you catch him putting something surrounded by his mouth. Give him lots of positive reinforcement, ie, "I like how you're acting like such a big boy and keeping toys out of your mouth!"
Hand, Foot, & Mouth disease runs rampant in toddlers and preschool-age children. My son have it when he was three, and I just about faint dead away when the pediatrician showed me the lesions in his mouth & throat. They be so red and obviously painful I wanted to cry for him. I believe he did powerfully with a course of antiviral meds, and it cleared quickly. Remember, strep is a bacterial illness and not at adjectives related to foot & mouth, which is a virus that presents similarly to chicken pox.
