What are some appropriate 1st birthday planning...?

I've already gotten the invitations. I got them on sale a few months ago and honestly forgot exactly what was on them! I would approaching to have a themed birthday party but it really doesn't matter. I other say that my baby looks like a penguin because of how his tresses is.I guess you'd just have to see him but do you think a penguin cake may be cute? His birthday isn't until December (I know, I know, I'm planning WAY ahead) but i would close to to go ahead and start thinking of things before I am in arts school and work full time. We are probably going to have his party in the gym at our church so that is to say already taken care of. Any cute suggestions of a theme or unique cake to make? Thanks a bunch!

Paint some 2 liter soda bottles up like penguins and make a bowling set with them for guests to play next to.
