Are lurchers dutiful next to babies?

i have a 17month old toddler and my boyfriend is thinking of getting a lurcher puppy, i was wondering if anyone know what these dogs are like around children.
I have read they are one of the best dog breeds to get for around kids? is this true?
Answers:    Dachshunds are in truth known for being bad 'child' dogs. Just clich¨¦. They have back problems, and some of the worst biters I've ever met were dachshunds.

Anyway, Lurchers aren't really a breed but a mutt. A combination of sighthounds to try and breed a dog that will react and chase better. As such, it's impossible to tell what type of personality it would enjoy from it's breeding, though you can meet the parents and decide. They CAN be great with kids. Greyhounds (one of the more adjectives sighthounds used) are good with kids and are fairly laid put a bet on. But they could also be the type who would see your toddler run and knock him down and hold him down.

Since it would be a puppy, you could start training immediately to make sure the dog is well trained and will not chase unless given a command to. I would recommend not using a program that works on panic since a dog who respects someone because the person can pin them will use the same method on a child. :/

In short, if you want to make sure that the dog is great near kids, then have him get an full-size dog who has been shown to have that sense of self. If you get a puppy, you are going to have him nipping and chasing until almost 2 years old anyway (not to mention eating the toys) while he himself grows up. After that, the dog should calm down and if you've done training will be polite with kids. But that will be the case with ANY dog.
I only did a quick search, and I honestly think that you should consider a smaller quantity high maintenance dog. Lurchers apparently tend to have a large amount of energy and require at least one walk a light of day. With a child in the house, especially a small one, there is the possibility that the dog will have an extreme excess of vivacity, because you will be busy with the child. Since the dog will be a puppy, it may also think of your son/daughter as a sibling and try to wrestle or play-fight with them, possibly harm your child.
My experience, such as it is, would suggest that you adopt a dog from animal friends or another reputable shelter. We got a dachshund at our Animal friends, and he is one of the most patient, loving dogs I know. These are usually adult animals, and they will own a fully developed 'personality', if you will. 1-3 year old smaller dogs are usually better, as your child can grow up with the same dog for 18-20 years, depending on the breed.
