How long can a mother produce milk?

I don't know why this question popped in my head but I be wondering what the limitation of milk production was. If a mother continues to feed her infant (or other children) will she indefinitely produce milk until menopause?

This have nothing to do with an actual situation, just abstract curiosity.
Yes, contained by theory, a woman can keep producing milk until menopause, provided she continues nursing/pumping. I plan on nursing my son as long as he wants to nurse. He's 11 months very soon and shows no signs of stopping any time soon.
If you continue to stimulate the glands they will continue to produce milk. A long long time ago women made a career of this..They be wet nurses..They lactated constantly and fed other children mostly of well to do family who could afford to pay for them.If you keep up stimulation and feeding next yes it could continue indefinitely.
You produce milk as long as your breasts are stimulated. Even if you haven't be pregnant you can stimulate your breasts to produce milk. Even when you're old you can.
She will continue to produce milk as long as she is nursing. Theoretically you could pump your breast to continue lactating after your child is weaned, but I can't predict why you would want to do that. Physically it is the same way cows are kept lactating. As long as you milk them they will keep producing milk.
They will continue to produce as long as milk is being used. For example, when hospitals used to hold wet-nurses they didn't necessarily have young children of their own anymore, they just kept producing milk because they nursed babies while working adjectives the time. Not to compare us to farm animals, but cows work the same way...lol...as long as you hang on to milking them, they'll keep making milk.

You have me curious about whether or not menopause will stop it though...does the hormone changeover stop the milk? I'll have to investigate today!! lol
I think so. Only if stimulated though. Even if she stops for a long time and then starts with a kid that isn't even hers. I know a women who breast feeds her 8 year old daughter. That is just disturbing.
Answers:    This is a give somebody the third degree that I have never read in any of my lactation books but here is the best answer I can come up with. A women will verbs to produce milk as long as their is someone or something that is removing the milk from her breast. Think of wet nurses - breastfeeding was their situation for years. As far as when they stop - menopause (itself) would stop milk production. Milk production is controlled by the autocrine system. A woman does not need a uterus or ovaries in order to breastfeed. All she desires are breasts and a functioning pituitary.
