My friend also has no belly button, but it was because she was born beside some or all of her organs and/or intestines outside of her body. Not sure exactly which it was, but something was outside her body and so when they stitched her spinal column up she was left without a belly button.

Answers:    The umbilical cord is attached to the fetus internally, not externally. The abdominal wall then forms around the umbilicus. Though all fetuses have umbilical cords not adjectives have belly buttons as newborns. When the umbilical cord is cut in a usually developed newborn, a belly button is created. The belly button is just the outward remnant of the umbilical cord in a normally developed newborn. However, if the abdominal wall fail to close around the umbilical cord, it is entirely possible to be born without a belly button.

Although you have to have an umbilical cord if you are a mammal. But if you are an amphibian
