More food ends up on the floor/wall than contained by her stomach?
Poppy has issues (not as in crazy ones) with food. She have some aversions and a gag problem, along with multiple allergies and a VERY strong personality so feeding her have ALWAYS been terrible. Anyway, at 14 months we finally got her sour of pureed stage 1 food and introduced finger food. It went down well but she definitely doesn't drink enough, losing interest after one or two bites or whatever we give her. Anyway, that's not really my issue at the moment... My issue is that she will not hold anything on the tray of her high chair that she doesn't want to be there. Not even a crumb of bread. Nothing. I can sit her sippy cup right at the put money on of the tray, out of what I thought was arms reach and I will come and it will be off the tray. It started when we first introduced her to solids and at first she simply finished drinking something and then put the bits she didn't want over the edge of the high bench, not ideal but not really a huge problem as she was learning and we hold a wooden floor. BUT let me tell you, this new throwing the food everywhere is on a horizontal that even my Mother can not tolerate and she has had/raised a lot of children. It's like she is possessed and her hand go at about a million miles an hour when she is swatting everything off the tray. The bizarre point is, she can be eating something and really enjoying it and then out of nowhere, she'll newly go crazy and has to have everything bad the tray.
Is this something you've experienced before? Or is this yet another way of Poppy controlling her ingestion situation?
What would you do? Keep wiping down the walls/floors/yourself and insist on carrying on with breakfast/lunch/dinner? Or at the first throw, would you stop the meal and assume she have had enough? My problem with the latter route is that she can do it after the first bite...
Will she devour on the floor? Not OFF of the floor, obviously, but try putting a towel down and sit her on the floor. Maybe she's not too keen on the high stool. Also, do you try feeding her at different times throughout the day?
If nothing else works I would lately stop the meal all together. Don't get angry near her, just clean her up and let her shift play. I don't think this is her, it sounds totally normal, and she'll come around eventually. If you're not worried about her immensity and growth then just wait her out.
My 19 month ripened has been a food thrower for quite some time too. She won't do it after the first bite anymore, but I enjoy to grab her tray as soon as she's finished or everything is going on the floor!
I suggest giving Poppy only a few little pieces of food at a time. Some kids feel overwhelmed by the prospect of consumption an entire meal. If she eats what she's given, praise her wildly and distribute her some more. If she throws it on the floor, take the tray away, give her a sippy or a toy for a few minutes and then try again. I'm of the mind that this behavior is more of a gears for controlling mom and dad than it is for controlling what she's eating. So try to make as little fuss about it as possible when she make a mess. Say nothing, remove the tray (but keep her in the chair), and shame her for a few minutes. After that, try putting the tray back. If she doesn't want it, or if she goes right back to throwing food short eating anything, then the meal is over.
Good luck.
Answers: Ha, yeah motherhood, my 1yr old is the same process, food is in places i didn't even know he had, as for my floor thank God for "Lucy" she's our little dog she sits by Jack's highchair and cleans floor the whole time haah.
Hmm... I would probably take the food and drink away without delay from her tray and look sternly at her and say "no , you don't do that". I would then slowly put on of the food items or drink back on the tray and if she tries to throw, I would seize and say no to her again till she would eventually learn. When she would actually eat/ drink afterwards I would praise her by clapping for her and saying something like "yay'. That is just me though. Cause/reaction. Good luck!!
My 10.5 month infirm is the same way. She does eat though,. We own 3 dogs, so the floor is not dirty for long, hee hee. We have had to not only vary her clothing after a meal, but ours as well. She has settled down beside different foods, we do not put more than a few pieces of food at a time and then only one type at a time, otherwise she will choose what she likes and throw the rest past its sell-by date, even cry about it. So, its a long process, we did find that she loves pancakes, nothing on the floor. a recipe I got stale here actually. Banana Blue berry pancakes, email me if you want the recipe. I can post it if you like too
