Would you chose an Episiotomy over a Tear?

I'm really freaked out over the possibility of getting an episiotomy.

Are they really that bad?

Would you chose that over getting a tear?
Hell no. Tears heal better, and episiotomies usually result within more damage than you would have had a moment ago leaving it alone. Think of your perineum like a plastic bag...if you verbs on it, it will stretch to a certain extent without tearing. However if you put even a small cut surrounded by it and then pull, it tears easily. Same promise. Episiotomies are not recommended as routine procedure by any medical board and should never be done unless absolutely necessary. Necessity usually just applies in cases of a forceps delivery or vacuum extraction.

I'm planning a homebirth with a midwife who pretty much NEVER does them, but will own it specified in my birth plan that I do NOT give consent for an episiotomy, should I end up next to a hospital transfer for some reason. I will kick that doctor within the head if he picks up the scissors without my permission.
Any day. I didn't even feel my episiotomy. And I don't have a mutilation from it. An episiotomy is an incision made to the side of the vaginal opening where it's easier to heal. Tears are usually along the perenium (from the vagina to the anus) which is extremely bumpy and hard to heal. Tears are often rough and toothed, where as episitomies are a clean, quick cut, another plea they are easier to heal.

An episiotomy is less painful and smaller quantity dangerous than a tear.
Answers:    I choose to tear fairly than have an episiotomy. All I felt when tearing (2nd degree) be a little stinging. The skin is so stretched at the time that it's not really painful at all. The most bleeding thing was the needle afterwards to numb the nouns so that they can stitch the tears back up. I'm not a real needle human being though anyway.

It does hurt afterwards when you use the bathroom but it will hurt even with an episiotomy. The best advice I got from the midwives be to pee in the shower or spray water over the area as you are going. As unexpected as that sounds the water dilutes the urine and it doesn't sting.

I choose to tear naturally as the information provided by my midwives indicated that the tears are easier to alleviate. Also with an episiotomy it doesn't necessarily prevent tearing in adjectives cases.
i had an episiotomy and truthfully, it's not bad. the doc looks at you and sees if he/she think the baby will be too big to come through without a tear and may product the decision that you need an episiotomy. the good entry about these is that they check to see if you have any residual feeling down within before they cut. if you do, they'll give you some shots to make you completely numb. you don't hold that option with a tear.. Plus, a gash may not be as straight or controlled. then they stitch you up and its all good -- the stitches dissolve and any remaining bump from the tie sour goes away by two months.
From what I've read ( I read alot... LOL) they've decided that episiotomies cause more damage than tear. They do more harm than good. My doctor tore me so that he could unwrap the umbilical cord from around the first babies neck. Didn't perceive it at all, and didn't really make a difference to me. Only thing is that when you hold to use the restroom, it burns a bit when the urine hits it for the first few days. I imagine that would be the same with a opening or episiotomy, though.
I had both. I have an episiotomy and then my son was so large that I tore even further than that. Not to be wicked or gross or graphic, but I was cut and then torn front to put a bet on. I had over 10 stitches. To be honest, I was in the zone from transfer and in pain from that where I didn't consistency or notice him cut and then didnt feel or catch sight of the tear.

Also, barely noticed the getting the stitches because I be so fixated on watching my fiance hold our son.

Everyone told me the stitches were so itchy and hurt...I never had issues and before I know it they had dissolved. They itches once and a lukewarm washcloth placed there did the trick. Everyone's bodies are different though.
I had in my birth plan that i did NOT want an episiotomy. And when i had my child, i didn't have one. I did have a second degree split. But really, baby head coming through vagina- you don't notice the tear at the time. And if you take good care of your stitches afterward, they restore to health fine, and there's nothing to worry about.

I also hold read that a tear heals better than a cut.

Also, if you do have one, it CAN shred further. Sometimes worsening the end result over if you'd just let it slash naturally. If there is no need for one, you're better sour not getting one.
I would to some extent tear. A natural tear is single like, a 1st degree tear (more similar to a bad abbrasion) . But an episiotomy is like a 2nd or 3rd degree slash (the deeper layers of skin are cut).

A tear heals faster than an episiotomy, but a hole is harder to stitch. (I think that's why doctors prefer to cut you)

Just let nature hold over and you'll be fine!
YES, that is why they are becoming smaller quantity common. When you cut into the body, you are weakening the tissue, making it more likely that tear will occur, especially deep muscle tearing. :( A split is much more preferable, and heals better.
Good to note: changing positions within labor helps SO much! Like squatting opens you up 25% more. ;)
Well I had an episiotomy and it really didn't hurt much after ! I was up and walking the hallways two days after, the solely time it really hurt was when I sneezed once, OMG !

All the friends I know who had tears hobbled around for a week or two...

But then again, I don`t know that's just me, or I was lucky or something ! I was pretty zoned out, and the doctor didn't ask me, but if I have to choose again, I would opt for another episiotomy. If you really don't want one, make it VERY clear to the staff before you reach that bit of labor (like early on, and whenever they change shifts), because you will be focused on getting that baby OUT, not tear and stuff.

Good luck on your labor !!
i tore
and i had the epidural
it wasnt that desperate
but i had never been snipped so i cant give u a objective judgment
I had an episiotomy. My doctor just did it so I didn't get the choice, not approaching I would have cared at the time anyways. I would say if you are hugely against it to have it in your birth plan and have your partner or whoever is beside you reiterate if need be at the time of delivery. I believe that any time you have stiches down here it will end up the same in the expiration, uncomfortable. But it only last for a moment while and you heal so don't be freaked out. After it's all said and done, you'll be happy if you didn't return with a c-section. I have heard those are much worse! GL.
i tore and it be fine i had the epideral though i would advise you just to cleave instead of an episiotomy because you would heal easier because it natural but its up to what ur doc useually does so ask the doc it was sore for something like three weeks after giving birth

good luck i hope you dont have to do either one
HECK YES they are horrible =[. both are horrible. i had both. i have a second degree tear, internal tears and an episiotomy. they all hurt one and the same in my opinion but the episiotomy heals quicker and is a straight procession, not jagged...its easier to sew up. but dont worry, they will give you misery killers and just stay off your foot, use a sitzbath, and keep a big pad on for padding. it will one and only be painful for about a week or less.
I tore which I didnt feel during the birth (epidural) but the salvage was rough. I was so sore and couldnt sit on my bottom for weeks.
I have to get cut because his heart rate was dropping and they wanted to capture him out quicker. It didn't hurt. In fact, I didn't even know that he cut me until I was getting stitched up. They numb you and you can't really see anything.
They say tears are harder to heal than a short time ago being cut, but I'd hate to have a doctor right to be heard "oh looks like your going to tear" and have it turn out that you really wouldn't have and after gotten an episiotomy for no reason. I thought about putting it in my birth plan that I didn't for any apology want to get an episiotomy, but I was induced at my 36 week appointment so there be no time for that. Thankfully I didn't tear or get cut.
I wish that I could minister to. I never tore or needed one. But I am told that a tear heals cleaner and faster.
I tore with my first, but did not hold any tears or episiotomy with my second. I'm not going to lie, the tear be very painful for about a week or so. With my second toddler, I was up walking around normally within an hour of labor and didn't even discern like I had had a little one really. I personally would be afraid of getting an episiotomy for the fact that it may be unnecessary in the first place. The knob to not tearing is NOT the size of your baby, its the speed of your pushing and how fast the infant is coming. I listened very closely to my nurse...when she says to stop pushing, stop on the double! They will have their fingers inside of you stretching you so you will be less likely to crack.
I have an episiotomy and it hurt! A LOT, but from what my friends have told me a tear is much worse.
I've had both and it doesn't really concern since you are numbed down there and they both end in you getting stitches.
