Would you fairly your child be a pacifier or thumb sucker?
So I was wondering what all you parents out there feel about pacifier & thumb sucking; obviously we would much rather them do neither.. but if it come down to it which would you prefer or want and why?
Pacifier. My brother sucked his thumb til he be seventeen! It drove my mom crazy.
Atleast you can throw the pacifier away!
That's a tough one! I think I would run with the pacifier though for these reasons:
1. You can "remind" them that they can soothe by sucking by sticking it in their mouth, which might be difficult to do next to a flailing, cranky baby waving their arms all over the place.
2. You *can* lift the pacifier away meaning you're in control of when they stop their sucking habit - but I do presume that it's probably more traumatic for them than encouraging them and getting them to stop thumb sucking on their own.
That's really all I can think of. The biggest reason to front toward the paci is #1, and it's a pretty small reason. So really - whatever works for the family.
Pacifier
You can take them away. With thumbs, they will always have them (hopefully!)
If it came down to it a thumb.
*Thumbs don't breed yeast or other microbes
*Thumbs don't break or pose a choking hazard
*Thumbs have never been recall
*Baby can't crawl or use both hands and suck their thumb
*Thumbs aren't related with early weaning
*Thumb don't block a prospect of a child's mouth -people will still smile at a baby sucking their thumb but studies show people smile less at babies using a pacifier
*I've never see a parent abuse a thumb, I've never seen a parent place their baby's thumb in their mouth because they made a clatter or spit it out.
*If left alone 95-99% of babies will stop sucking their thumb by age 3-4 before it can damage their fully fledged teeth.
But frankly I have two kids and neither sucked anything because they had ZERO need for it (well unmistakably the go through phases where everything goes within their mouth they just have no preference for any one object). I am a SAHM and I breastfeed, they don't involve a mommy replacement because they have a mommy. Even if I were somehow forced to bottle feed I would cheer them to comfort suck on my finger or breast. Sucking a caregivers finger provides the skin-to-skin comfort and closeness that a baby needs.
my son started sucking his thumb at 1 day ripened and got a dummy in his mouth u can threw a dummy away u can cut there thumb rotten and thumb suckers get misshaping teeth and often have enthusiasm long problems with thumb sucking
I used a pacifier with my son, and it's a nightmare now. We be going through a lot of life changing events, and I consent to him hold on to it too long thinking it would ease the transitions, but he's 4 now, and I can't get him to present it up! I've tried everything, binky fairy, cutting holes in the tip, throwing them away...
My daughter is 7 months, and she's used a pacifier resembling, 3 times. I don't offer her one anymore.
If you're going to use a pacifier, take it away by the time the baby is resembling 6 months, when the need to suck starts disappearing. Or else it will haunt you forever. ;)
Pacifier. You can throw out the pacifier, you can't cut off the thumb.
My 3 yr out-of-date sucked a pacifier but he stopped a yr ago. My 5 year old is a hard core thumb sucker and still sucks his thumb. So I would say pacifier because you can ween them rotten of it so much easier than a thumb.
pacifier...not as bad as the thumb [for babys teeth] & you can get rid of it.
pacifier and hope when the fairy steals it they dont find the thumb as a nice alternative Source(s): weaning toddler from paci for a month! nouns is understatement.NEVER agian.
Thumb.
It looks better than having a piece of plastic in near. I'd rather have a 2 year old that sucks his thumbs than a 2 year feeble with a pacifier.
Pacifier. You can steal the paci away, but you can't take the thumb away.
I much prefer thumb sucking. Why?
1- babies and toddlers physically can't suck their thumbs as much as they can a pacifier. They have to lug their thumbs out of their mouths to crawl, play, run, explore, and grow up. They end up sucking their thumbs less than a pacifier because they can't just go it in their mouths all the time.
2- thumbs are always in attendance and easy to keep clean and to find. I already dust my son's hands regularly, and it's much easier to keep his thumb clean and know where on earth it is than to keep a pacifier clean and to find it. I'm not the one in charge of his thumb, and if he wishes to suck it that's fine, he can do that. I don't have to be the keeper, finder, cleaner, and refinder of his pacifiers.
3- I prefer thumbs over pacifiers because Mom just can't purloin them away. I think it's really sad when Mom gives a pacifier, Baby get attached to it, and then Mom just takes them adjectives away again. It's not fair, and not respectful to Baby and definitely not a realistic expectation. My son sucks his thumb because he is attached to that sucking motion and uses it to soothe himself. As he have become more active he sucks his thumb much less, usually just to backing him sleep or to calm himself down. He is naturally weaning himself from sucking his thumb, and will stop sucking on his own provided I don't push it. I can't just tweak away his security when I decide he's too big; he has to prefer that, and I'm very happy about that. And, since he already sucks his thumb smaller quantity than a pacifier-toddler would, he's doing well.
dummy (pacifier) you can take a dummy away after a time but you cant take their thumb away!
I do not like pacifiers or the accompanying fits kids throw if you try to get rid of them. When I see a 4 year old beside a pacifier, it is just gross to me! My babies can't have a pacifier.
i prefer pacifier, cause when it comes time to take it away you can throw the paci away.
pacifier, both my kids used them, my daughters be gone by 15 mths, im planing on doing the same with my son
my daughter loves her pacifier and im glad cause i can take it away but presently she sucks her thumb when the pacifier is mia. so i guess it really doesnt matter.
Thumbs, it's more natural and they won't suck at hand thumbs just to keep quiet, as a parent can mistake the have need of to suck for hunger and basically just force a pacifier in a baby's mouth. They can't lose their thumb surrounded by the middle of the night, so they actually SELF soothe and not depend a binky that can be lost or misplaced. That can't crawl, walk or run beside a thumb in their mouth, wheras a pacifier frees both hands. Pacifiers can interfere with nursing an infant.

Deffinately pacifier! You cant purloin the thumb away!!
Thumb.
I own no need to control my kid's sucking -- don't get the 'you can take a pacifier away!!' plus; if you're going to start a need like that, best to see it through until the kid is ready to self-wean, rather than (1) giving kid a plastic plug to shut him up and letting him use it until it's a comfort jib (2) yanking that comfort object away -- and think it's a moment or two perverse to go around plugging up babies anyway. It looks ridiculous. With a thumb I know it's not in there for my own convenience, and the thumb have to come out for most activities, so it's not in there anywhere in the neighbourhood as much as a pacifier would be...
These criticisms go out the window for colicky newborns for whom zilch else is working, but...
"obviously we would much rather them do neither.."
?
Why's that?
Pacci for reasons others have stated.
Answers: I didn't care for either, and I wasn't against either when my son be born. I got lucky though, he doesn't use a paci or suck his thumb and he is almost 14 months. I am hoping I'll be this lucky with my second.
Pacifier, thumbs never go away. I hold seen 6-7 year old sucking their thumbs and I dont want my son doing that.
