New mom! and breastfeeding! i own a cross-question can you give a hand?
Okay so my milk came in finally! i have be breast feeding for 6 days now. and it seems to be going in good health. Im a first time mommy and needing some help. I feed the babe-in-arms on one side for like 20 mins and he stops and refuses the other breast. Is this normal? i nurture him every two hours and alternate each breast. I woke up this morning and saw that one of the breast was leaking? When can I start pumping milk and freezing it? And should the infant be eating from one breast at 20 mins and the other at 20mins.. for a total of 40mins? every 2 hours?? Thanks ladies for any advice!!
First, some babies can eat faster than others. I've hear some moms say their babies were able to uninhabited their breasts in 5 minutes right from the start. How you are feeding is perfectly fine. It is suggested to alternate breasts during respectively feeding at the beginning when establishing your milk supply, but if your baby seem to be getting enough and is gaining weight, don't verbs about it. I alternated breasts at each feeding at the instigation, but later on I also only offered one breast per feeding.
The amount of time isn't significant - just that he is full and gaining weight.
You will escape on and off for a while - it's normal. You can start pumping and freezing as soon as you feel in position!
Sounds like you're doing fine! Source(s): still breastfeeding at 8 months
oh when my milk come in my boobs were so engorged my son only ate for 5 mins on one and be full. you can start pumping when you want but that will make your supply go up. it is normal to nurture on only one breast especially when your baby is little they can't take much within their little tummys :D
make sure both your boobs get emptied. and find nursing pads if you don't have any.
I leaked alot at first. Source(s): GOOD JOB<3
Answers: You are doing a great job... I did impossible to tell apart.. let him nurse for 20 min on a breast and then switched breasts for the next feed. Not all babies will feed off of both breasts during one feed... and switching them without letting them empty the first breast completely can cause problems near a froremilk/hindmilk imbalance and give your little nasty liquid green stools and can also cause clogged milk ducts. Again, you are doing just fine...
ps.. you can start storing milk now.
Some babies def. eat faster than another, so as long as he is satifisfied for a while, anything he wants to do is fine. I found that esp. in the morning when you have the most milk, my dd one and only wanted one side, then in the evening when I have less she would eat on both. Just offer both and if he doesn't want it its ok, as long as he isn't wanting to devour again right away. 2 hours is totally normal for how often at this age. The one thing you probably do want to do is sort sure he finishes one breast and gets the hind milk, instead of feeling like you other need to feed off both breasts.
Leaking is totally typical, too. For some women it lasts a long time, for me jsut a few weeks and sometimes after growth spurts. It is basically that your body hasn't quite worked out how much milk your kid actually needs yet, that can filch a couple of weeks at first.
You can start pumping anytime you want. It might encorage your body to make a bit more milk than you acutally need, though, since like I said your body is still trying to integer that out now. But usually only if you pump quite plentifully will it be a problem. The morning is a great time to pump since you have a lot of milk - let him nurse on one side and later pump the other, which will help you be more comfortable as well as building up a supply.
Note the most drs say not to introduce a bottle until 3-5 weeks to avoid nipple confusion, but you can preserve milk in the freezer for up to 3 months, so pumping and freezing now will still be fine.
Just follow your baby's cues, don't over reckon it. Your baby sounds like he is getting plenty from just one breast which is fine. You can pump rotten the other side if you want but keep in mind that milk is produced on supply and demand so pumping may mete out you to over produce which can cause it's own issues. I would only pump off ample for comfort but not empty the breast if that's what you want to do. Some babies eat for 40 minutes total, some only 10 minutes total. Some get through every 1, 2, or even 3 hours. They are all different, each day may fluctuate.
Make sure to feed on one breast until he is finished, ensuring he gets the hind milk. After next offer the second but he doesn't need it if he isn't hungry. Some days he may want both sides and some he may only want one.
It sounds to me close to you are doing just fine, just over thinking it.
