My son WAS sleeping really okay at darkness... What happen?
At 2 months old, my son was going to bed between 8 and 8:30, and not waking up until between 3 and 5 for his first nurture. I was so excited! It took my daughter 7 or 8 months to sleep that long. Well, now he's 3 months old, and he's subsidise to waking up 4 or 5 times in the night. He never sleeps more than 4 hours at a time, and the other dark he got up every hour and a half all darkness long! The only way I can get him stern to sleep (without letting him scream for too long and wake up my daughter) is to nurse him. But I feel approaching that's just going to make it worse, because he'll want to wake up a short time ago to be comforted. I don't know... Do you think it's just that he's more aware of his surroundings and realizes I'm right nearby? (He's in a bassinet in our room.) Maybe it's time to move him to his own room? Or maybe he requests a naptime schedule now instead of just sleeping whenever? I of late don't know why he's waking up so much, and I'm EXHAUSTED. Help please!
This is good timing because i was of late reading an article in BABY magazine about this yesterday.
They suggested that when sleep pattens get out of whack that you determine what would be cause it. Sometimes (esp. with the younger baby's that were sleeping well) a cold or some sort of ailment is the culprit. Is he showing any symptoms of a cold or just not acting his self surrounded by other ways?
You mentioned that he is sleeping whenever he wants through out the day. I know it will be tough for you, as you aren't getting as much sleep either, however you should try to hold him awake through out the day as much as you can with maybe solely one or two naps. This way he will be more tired throughout the night next and will be more likely to sleep for longer. Another trick is that when he is napping make it completely dark for him. This simulates darkness time and he will become accustomed to sleeping when it is dark out Vs. when it is light out.
One more item is that newborns are thought to be able to smell their mothers milk, strange i know. But also try moving the crib into another room close to yours but not in yours and see if this help any :)
Hang in there, he'll be back to average soon enough. :)
Has he learned something new lately? Sometimes when a baby learn something new, they become eager and excited, and lose track of their 'schedule'. Also, he could be going through a growth spurt...
It's okay, I'm exhausted too. My 11 month old have an ear infection. It hasn't been fun for either of us. Zombie mode initiated!
Answers: 3 months is prime time for a growth spurt. It may be that he needs to eat although his wake for food shouldn't last to long if that's what it is. And I found with both my babies that they slept much better in their own rooms. I know my husbands snoring, tossing and turning and wake up to use the washroom must have affected his sleep. As soon as we got them surrounded by their own rooms they slept much better.
The same thing is happening next to my 4 month old, for about 3 weeks he doesn't want to go to sleep at dark, then wakes up every couple hours and the only channel to get him to sleep again is to nurse him. I don't know what to do, my mom just told me to keep sticking to the diary i'm doing and he'll get over whatever he's going through eventually. Good luck, hang surrounded by there, you're not alone on this one.
Is he starting to teeth? I know it's a little hasty but the 6 month old I nanny for starting teething at 3 months. Shes now 6 months and has 5 teeth already! As for a naptime agenda, good luck :(
