Why is my 6-year-old pretending she can't read?

My daughter is 6 and while I know she can read, she pretends that she cannot. She'll try to sound things out and knows her kindergarten vocabulary list, but next says she can't read anything else. Problem is, I've caught her reading things - the phrase "Wheee I'm getting dizzy!" on a toy box, and the word "Firefox" on my computer screen. When I mention it, she always comes up beside an excuse as to why she knows what the things say, but insists she can't read it. (The excuses are pretty lame too - she's 6, not exactly a criminal mastermind or anything.) Has anyone else hear of this, ever? And WHY would she do this?!
usually its due to laziness and not wanting to or they know they can return with out of doing it and you do it for them. my brother was the same way. he still is approaching that. he does it because he gets lazy and knows someone will do it for him.
Your daughter probably wants attention and thinks that this is the way to draw from it. She most likely wants you to sit down and help her read so that the two of you can spend some time together.
You should read books to her to gladden her, and try to get her to read along with you. Tell her that you want to do well within school and make time with her on the weekend. She'll appreciate the time that you spend together and will most credible stop pretending that she can't read.
Answers:    Thanks for asking this question!! I have a 6 year old too and he is alike way. So stubborn. I think he still wants to be baby and read to so this is what I do. In the Dr Suess type readers I will read one paragraph and he will read the next. We do this through the whole book. He is much more of a mind to read in this format than for me to sit down and tell him to read it all. Plus next I ask him to read to his younger sister which he enjoys too because it makes him seem to hold control over her. lol Oh, also, try not to make it an argument because then she will just be even more stubborn roughly speaking it.
my little brother was and is like that . he can read he read things from his ps2. its just things that she finds interesting for example my lil brother loves animals so its easier to get him read things along those lines, so find things shes interested in ,perchance barbies or cats, something a 6 yr old girl likes.
She wants your attention. Sit down and read a book to her-- even ask her to help you read it. Have her sound out a word or two. You can also try the "Psh... I'm SURE you don't know what this say... It's waaaay too difficult". Present her with a challenge (even if its a fake one) and praise her similar to crazy when she gets it right.
She requests you to sit down and help her.. she wants more attention
