Should a six year infirm be capable of read?

I was just wondering my cousin is six years old and she can only just read anything! what should a six year old be able to read? and what shouldn't they? she can also speak more than 2 languages.
I started school (preschool) when I was 3. I was age 4-5 within kindergarten, and then age 5-6 in first grade. In first class I was able to read through Dr. Seuss decently.

So picture books, pretty much.

In second and third category I read Junie B. Jones. Which is a chapter book.

So I hope I gave you some ideas as to what she should be at!
I'm a trainer and a mom of a six year old. Please don't worry about your cousin. She's clearly not dumb. Kids at the age of six vary greatly in their reading ability. At my daughter's kindergarten graduation, the director be talking about how all of the kids could "read"----sure, some of them could and I guess it included my daughter but we're not conversation about handing them the morning paper and asking them to read it. Kids this age should make out all letters and their corresponding sounds and it's great if they can "read" easy text with repetitive texts like "I resembling cats. I like dogs. I like fish. I like cows." One sentence per page next to a picture of the corresponding animal on the page. They should point to the words when they read and know where to begin reading on a page, where the title is, and that paper goes from left to right.
Knowing how to speak two languages may in fact be an explanation for a lag in reading. If she's speaking one language at home and another at conservatory (which maybe she's working on a little bit), then seriously of her energy may be directed twoards going back and forth between the two languages initially. There's a book give or take a few this by an author named Igoa that talks about the experiences of immigrant children surrounded by coming to a new environment.
okay, i was able to read short stuff by age 3. but i can only speak one prose...
most kids are still struggling with reading at ages 6 and 7. i'm in 8th grade but i own an adult reading level. my brother has some study disabilities, and at 11, he still cannot read.
everybody's reading ability is different.
your cousin should probably be able to read:
signs
short books with short words and considerable print
and might not be able to read:
anything other than that.
Yes six year olds should be able to read unless they own a learning disability. If you feel that is the armour, perhaps your cousin should go to a facility that can determine if she needs special classes.

If your cousin does own problems reading it could be a serious problem later on, as she will have trouble catching up to her peers.

Get in touch near your cousin's guidance counselor, they should have more information. Source(s): Student
She should be able to read basic words, like "can".

But everyone develops at their own rates. :) She seem to work better vocally, since she can speak more than two languages.
I be taught to read at a very early age. My parents skilled me a lot of things before I started school. I remember within kindergarten I was sent to like 1st and 2nd grade reading classes and help them and learned with them since I was advanced compared near my peers. I was even advanced compared to the 1st and 2nd graders who are 6-8 years old. And I was 5.lol

So your cousin seem intelligent since she already knows 2 languages. I think conceivably if her parents, or you took time to read to her and read with her. That would help her a lot.
it just depends on the child really, my 8yr old could read fluently from the age of 6 but thats because we enjoy 30 mins of reading every night...but theres a few still in her class that cant read they need that extra facilitate Source(s): myself
They should be able to read some words, and sentences. Here is a relation to Dolch Sight words. Kids that are 6 should know most, if not all of these words. Just remember that all children develop Cognitive skills at different times..http://www.kidzone.ws/dolch/kindergarten.htm Source(s): http://www.kidzone.ws/dolch/kindergarten.htm
no i didnt read til i was 8
I learned to read when I was three, but that's because my mom spent profoundly of time helping me. I loved it.
Some kids don't love it, or don't have parents with the spare time to help them.
Every kid is different.
My brother wasn't as hopeful to learn, but he still learned at school by the time he be about six, so that would be a normal age to learn, I deduce.
six year old: able to read the larger books beside pictures well
Not able to read: I'd say the harry potter books would be a bit much. lol.

I read the fellowship of the ring when I be 8. Shoot for that. Why can't this kid read? She hasn't been stuck in her room with zilch but books, has she? She isn't reading because she doesnt need to.

also, who speaks 'more than 2 languages.' If you speak 'more than 2' wouldn't you articulate "I speak 3 languages." There should be a particular number here. And speaking two languages drastically poorly is no subsitute for reading one language well.
Every child has their own time frame of doing things...walking, potty training etc. A child at the age of 6 should be capable of read basic words such as "cat", "dog", "jump" and small sentences.

The child's parent's need to read to them daily which help the child to read themselves.
Yes they definitely should be able to read. My daughter is 6 and can read comparatively well. It's a lot more than 3 or 4 letter words.
Children mostly learn to read around the time they enter first grade.
I learned to read while within first grade, and I am now one of the top readers within my advanced classes.
I would not worry.
Most 6 year olds should be able to read some. Of course it depends... is she going into first grade? Recently turned 6? If so, she may solely know some sight words and other small things. Reading will come in time. If she's not reading on or above grade smooth by the end of first grade... that's a concern.

What she should know right now is adjectives of the alphabet, and their sounds. That is learned in Pre-K/Kindergarten. In Kindergarten children often revise sight words.

As for being bilingual that shouldn't impact her ability to read if she is bilingual surrounded by English and another language and she has the chance to read and look at books contained by both languages. Source(s): BA in Elementary Ed... going for MA in K-12 Bilingual/Bicultural Deaf Ed.
I was reading at 5 and 6, but I was fast. Other kids be still struggling at that age from what my parents told me. Source(s): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
2 languages? Wow!
My daughter was reading Chapter books earlier kindergarten
My son is still on level 1 and 2 of step books (he is going into 1st).
It depends on the child.
maybe try the biscuit books (it's roughly a dog) and go your library go to the kids part and read files. they will have really big text and have simple words within it
Whoa! She can speak more than 2 languages but she cant read? That's odd.
Well, I started reading when I be 4, but thats a little early i guess?
Sometimes kids can just be a short time late. They should be able to read at least somewhat
by the time they get to first grade. [:
yes the should be able to read simple words 1 memorandum to 5 letters. if she can;t read on her own read to her at night .

i was 3 when i read my first book.
Six year olds should to be capable of at least pick out simple words like cat, dog, stop, go, exit, run, fun, etc. Many six year olds are beyond that point within which they read simple things like 'the dog runs very fast.' Not adjectives six year olds have much more skill than this, but it does vary.

For more info ask your parents about how older you were when you started reading.
According to those "I can read" books, most kids swot to read between 4 and 8 years old. By the second half of kindergarten more than half the class is reading simple books resembling Dr. Seuss 'the cat in the hat'
Yes. I be reading from 2 and a half, and by the time I was 5, I was sent to first class to pick up short novels from there. Everyone develops at their own pace, though.

Kelly
when i be six i could read easy things , like really easy things . and even afterwards i had trouble .
they should. cat, dog, apple, are all preschool things. so you should tell someone to teach her. you know, so she doesn't crash behind. hope i helped!
Yes of course 6 years old can read. Parents probably read to them every dark when they sleep.
Answers:    very well, i used to work in daycare that had a kindergarten (of course, for five year olds), and i'm trying to remember. I think at that age, 5, they be able to read basic words and sentences like: cat, dog, girl, boy. The cat run fast. etc etc.

I'm assuming your cousin IS in school? If she is, she'll swot eventually. It sounds like maybe she didn't go to a preschool or some sort of pre-kingergarten training piece?

ALSO, because you said she speaks more than 2 languages, she may have a harder time learning to read, because she's erudition to read English, but THINKING in all the languages. So I'd vote her parents should get her special help before she really falls losing.

When i was in daycare, of the kids there, ages 3-5, that spoke more than one expression, would sometimes mix words of both languages in one sentence. Like this little boy would be telling a story give or take a few his uncle, and he'd tell it in english, but when it came time to right to be heard "uncle" he'd say it in his native speaking (not english). and he didn't really realize what he was doing. So your cousin may just be a little jumbled up right immediately. When she's older though, and past this, it'll be SO GREAT for her that she speaks more than one language!
Yes! :D she sounds smart!
some kids are slower that others she might not be able to read at all until she's 7 or 8 mostly that's normal, 1st and 2nd category should probably be reading scholastic books ,or other picture books 3rd grade should probably be reading magic tree house, semi chapter books

other children start chapter books at five or six it verys Source(s): teacher
Not if she's retarded.
