Why is pregnancy 42 weeks long?

I read on one website that pregnancy is 42 weeks long and everywhere else I read is 40 weeks. Why is that?

I hold just studied GCSE Child Development and a full term pregnancy is 40 weeks. Hope this helps : )
Answers:    anywhere from 38 weeks to 42 weeks is considered full term. most doctors wont let you go departed 42 weeks without inducing you...

pointless fact, as far as our closest ancestors (like monkeys, chimps, orangatans, etc) go we own the shortest gestational period in relation to fetal development. guess about it, their babies can hold on to mom as soon as they are born... can you imagine how long pregnancy would be if we had to be pregnant until our babies could hold onto us on thier own?!
