Madison/Addison for girls? Why...?

I just want to understand what would make somebody confer a little girl a name that is so clearly manly.

The meaning of the name Madison is Son Of Matthew/Maud

The meaning of the christen Addison is Son of Adam.

...Why would anybody use those names for a girl?

When they are, by very definition, BOY'S names.

I'm not man rude, I just don't understand... I for one would HATE to have a given name that meant ''son of''. It's not remotely pretty or feminine.
a lot of people don't care for meaning, but I'm like you, I care about what the cross means.

I think Addison became extremely popular because of Greys Anatomy and Private Practice
It's bizarre, isn't it.

you'd think the "-SON" would be clear plenty.

It does make me ponder something.

Iceland is the only Scandinavian country where daughters carry their own gender-specific last name. For example, Bjork's last christen is Gudmundsdóttir - indicating her status as a daughter.

Would anyone in this country ever give a clearly-indicated female given name to their son?

Likely not.

It's perfectly okay to want your daughter to be strong, but don't send her the message that the only approach to do this is by having a male name.
Some People Arent So Bothered About The Meaning
I Think The Names Sound Cute And They Can Also Be Given A Very Femenine Middle Name Such As
Madison Rose
Madison Elizabeth
Addison Louise
Addison Olivia x
umm excuse me my name is madison! my parents loved the name and personaly i do to... my first and middle baptize is madison dae... it could go either way.. it doesn't bother me at adjectives.. the name can ALSO mean gods almighty... which is what they be meaning it to be.. definitions of names renovation all the time.. but if u ask any teenager thats my age, most people construe of it as a girls name. Source(s): MYSELF!!
I hate them too.

Blame it on Darryl Hannah in "Splash". Madison be a punchline in that movie.
Personally I like more masculine name for girls. That is just me. Not really sure why but I like Charlie, Andy, etc. as girl's names. No explanation...I guess it's of late personal preference.
Madison be a bit of a popular boys name 100 years ago. I hate anything that ends in -son. Allison, Addison, Madison...
I hate the name Madison, its so overused.
And I plan on naming my son Addison.

I don't mind girls having boys/ boys have girls name at all.
I find it very innovative and pretty.
I personally don't like any name for a boy or girl.
But where I'm from, a boy with any name would catch so much grief as they are not considered boy's names at adjectives.
I've never like Madison or Addison for the longest time, and yet everyone uses the name for their daughters. So I agree with you.
Why don't you ask my mom? I'm sure she'll own an explanation for you. No, wait ... she'll give you an ear full for bashing her little one girls name, lol.

Sure, my name means son of Matthew, but that doesn't exactly cause me any less of a woman or any less feminine -- I for one love my name and wouldn't translation it because of it's controversial meaning. I'm sure I'm not the only Madison who feels impossible to tell apart way.
I know! That is really unfeminine, i connote if the daughter ever goes to look at the meaning of her name she might be in good health... offended. I know I would be.
Answers:    Finally, someone who agrees with me!

I agree, Madison and Addison are clearly boy's names, but very soon, over so much time, Madison is pretty much unacceptable as a boy's name. I think a boy name Madison would get picked on far more than a girl for having a "son of" name. Addison, thank goodness, can still go in the boys direction.
people pick names for a billion & one reason;; some to keep the family line; some because of the consequence of the name; some because they sound masculine or feminine;; some because when they be children they always liked that name (would've changed their entitle to);; some cuz they rely on others to name their kids;; my reason, I wanted something strong to represent my daughter, but also like feminine names, so masculine first name, feminine middle baptize;; was worried a little about initials when choosing the mission of naming, was worried about "nicknames" kids would call her as she grew thru gradeschool;; what's really funny, after adjectives that thinking, when I saw her face, I changed my decision;; the meaning of the term was the last thing on my mind, & here I find out that it mode "wild & crazy"?? who woulda known, just hope she doesn't integer it out until she's @ least 30 (LOL)... don't be angry @ these people, it's their life, some of these kids in reality really like their names, so who are you to say?? adjectives belongs to mom, dad & the child, that's all;; would you rather hear "bertha", or "gay", or "poindexter"?? all surrounded by context, just not your's...funny how respect has become a commodity & not a freedom anymore...
