Adoption Homestudy: What to expect?
My husband and I are wondering what we should expect from an adoption home study?
Also, we will be renovating our house (it's very 1980's right now and could really use a new kitchen) within the next 5-6 months. Is it best to wait until this is done before have them through?
Thanks!
I really wouldn't worry about the actual 'look' of your house; they are more interested to see that you realize safety issues with children (with the actual house). Our homestudy was MUCH more going on for how we ran our lives and how we interacted with each other and kith and kin, our beliefs, etc. than what our home looked like. They also know that it will take time to write a homestudy and that your house could look completely different by then!!
If you're doing a foster care adoption there are usually some rules something like having medicines locked up etc. But they don't have to be that means of access for the initial visit - they will give you a list of anythings you hold to change. For a private adoption they just want to make sure your house is ordinary - not a pig sty, and that you have a place for the baby. They also want to learn more or less you and your husband to see if you both are sincere about wanting to adopt and raise the child as you would a bio child. Ours visits be very low key, and not stressful at all. We adopt in northern california 3 years ago.
Answers: they just want to be sure the child will be placed in a safe envoirnment and to craft sure there is enough room for this child in your home. as long as you arent dirty etc. you should be okay next to 1980 look lol good luck
I be so nervous during mine, that we ended up redecorating partially the house! All they cared about, was whether it be safe and clean. It seems worrisome, but was the easiest part of the process
