Help next to book pet name please?

I once read a book a long time ago. It was about a girl who lived in Washington within the early days of the U.S. I think her name be May. She had a lot of brothers but not a sister. At the end of the book though her mom have another child who ends up being a girl. They let May choose her name. I believe it be Amy or something because it was her name in a different establish or it could be something else. I don't remember the name and i want my little sister to read it. If you know the name could you please tell me. Thanks!
